Understanding Transponder Keys

How Transponder Keys Work — The Technology Explained

Every car sold in the UK since approximately 1995 contains an immobiliser system. The immobiliser’s primary interface is the transponder key — the most common key type on UK roads, used on the vast majority of Ford, Vauxhall, Toyota, Nissan, Kia, Peugeot, Renault and many other models.

Inside the plastic head of every transponder key is a small passive radio frequency chip — no battery required. When the key is inserted into the ignition, a coil antenna around the ignition barrel generates a low-frequency electromagnetic field. This field energises the chip, which then transmits a unique identification code back to the vehicle’s ECU. If the code matches one stored in the ECU’s authorised key list, the engine is allowed to start. No match — no ignition, regardless of the blade.

This is why a correctly cut key blade that fits the ignition perfectly still won’t start the car if the chip isn’t programmed. The mechanical part and the electronic part must both be correct.

What Aaron does with your chip type
Chip identification

Aaron reads your vehicle’s immobiliser profile to identify the exact chip type and programming protocol required before cutting anything.

OBD programming (most chips)

Standard chips like PCF7936, ID46, ID47 and G/H-chip are programmed via OBD port using the Autel IM508 or Xhorse VVDI2. Fast and reliable.

Cloning for compatible blanks

Some chips can be cloned from a working original to a new blank — useful for spare keys where the vehicle data is read from the existing key.

EEPROM for locked chips

ID48 crypto chips on VW group vehicles require PIN extraction or EEPROM reading via VVDI2. Aaron covers this without needing to remove any module.

Transponder vs remote fob vs smart key: A transponder key is the basic standard — a blade with a chip in the head. A remote fob key adds a radio transmitter for central locking. A smart key replaces the mechanical blade entirely with a proximity sensor. This page covers transponder keys. For other types see the car key replacement page.

Programming Equipment

The Tools That Programme Every Chip Type

Not every programmer handles every chip type. Aaron carries two systems specifically for transponder programming — covering everything from basic PCF7935 chips through to encrypted ID48 crypto chips on the VW group MQB platform.

Why chip type matters when you call: Telling Aaron your vehicle make, model and year allows him to identify the exact chip type before arriving — ensuring he has the right programmer, the right blank and the right process for your specific immobiliser system. See the About page for full equipment details and the key programming page for a full breakdown of programming methods.

FAQs
A transponder key is a vehicle key with an electronic chip embedded in the plastic head. When inserted in the ignition, a coil antenna energises the chip, which transmits a unique code to the vehicle’s ECU. If the code is recognised, the engine starts. If not — even if the blade profile is correct — the immobiliser prevents ignition.
A transponder spare key (with a working original present) starts from £60. Transponder replacement (one key remaining) from £80. All-keys-lost transponder programming from £200. No VAT. No call-out fee. Exact price confirmed before Aaron sets off.
A transponder key has a chip for the ignition immobiliser — that’s it. No remote function. A remote fob key combines the transponder chip with a radio transmitter for central locking. Aaron programmes both types. See the car key replacement page for a full key type breakdown.
Yes — Aaron carries the Xhorse VVDI2 specifically for ID48 crypto chip programming on VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda. This includes MQB platform vehicles where basic cloning is not possible. PIN extraction is done via OBD without removing the cluster.
