“Remote on my Ford key stopped working completely. Aaron came out, diagnosed it on site, replaced the circuit board and it was sorted in 20 minutes. Cheaper than a new key and no dealer visit needed.”

Understanding Key Fob Failures

Why Key Fobs Fail — And What Can Be Fixed

A key fob is a sophisticated radio frequency transmitter programmed to communicate exclusively with your vehicle’s Body Control Module (BCM). When a fob stops working, the cause is usually one of five things — most of which are fixable on site without replacing the entire key.

Flat or Degraded Battery
Most common cause — fixable in minutes

Most remote fobs use CR2032, CR2025 or CR2016 coin cells. When the battery voltage drops below a threshold, the fob transmits too weakly for the vehicle to receive. A replacement battery often resolves the issue completely. However, a degraded battery left too long can damage the circuit board through leakage.

Worn Button Contacts
Rubber membrane fails after years of use

The rubber buttons press against metal contacts on the circuit board. Over time, the conductive rubber coating wears away. Pressing the button no longer completes the circuit. This is a repair — the contacts or membrane can be cleaned or replaced without needing a new fob.

Damaged Circuit Board
Drop damage, water ingress or battery leak

If the fob has been dropped, exposed to water or had a leaking battery, the circuit board may be corroded or cracked. In many cases the board can be replaced directly. Aaron carries spare PCBs for common makes.

Signal Interference / De-synchronisation
Fob lost sync with vehicle BCM

Occasionally a fob loses its programmed synchronisation with the vehicle’s BCM due to interference or a dead battery. The fob is physically intact but the vehicle no longer responds. Re-synchronisation is straightforward for most makes and doesn’t require a new key.

Irreparable Fob
Physical damage or obsolete component

In some cases — particularly severe water damage or physical destruction — repair isn’t viable. Aaron supplies and programmes a replacement fob, cut and coded to your vehicle on site.

Fob types Aaron covers
Standard remote fob
Separate fob for central locking — Ford, Vauxhall, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai and most mainstream makes.
Integrated fob key
Transponder key with fob in one unit — remote function separate from ignition. Very common post-2000.
Flip / switchblade fob
Folding blade retracts into fob body — Vauxhall, VW, SEAT, Renault and others.
Smart key fob
Keyless proximity fob — BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover, Audi Q models. More complex to repair.
Card remote
Flat card format — Renault Megane, Laguna. Specific repair procedure required.

Before calling: Try replacing the battery first — especially if the fob has gradually weakened over time rather than stopped suddenly. If a new battery doesn’t fix it, call Aaron. He’ll often be able to advise on the likely cause over the phone based on your make and the symptom.

Repair Process

How Aaron Diagnoses and Repairs Your Key Fob

Aaron always diagnoses before recommending a solution. The goal is to find the cheapest fix that restores full function — whether that’s a battery, a circuit board or a full replacement.

1
Call with Your Fob Symptom

Describe exactly what the fob is doing — buttons not responding, reduced range, intermittent, stopped suddenly. Aaron often pre-diagnoses the likely cause over the phone and brings the most relevant parts.

2
Aaron Arrives at Your Location

30–45 minutes. Aaron comes to you with diagnostic equipment and a stock of common replacement batteries, circuit boards and fob shells for popular makes.

3
On-Site Fob Diagnosis

The fob is opened and inspected. Battery voltage tested. Circuit board examined for corrosion, cracks and burnt traces. Button contacts tested under load. Signal transmission tested against vehicle response.

4
Repair Option Identified

Aaron explains what he’s found and gives two options where applicable: repair cost vs replacement cost. You choose. No pressure — Aaron recommends whichever is genuinely better value for the fault found.

5
Repair or Replacement Carried Out

Battery replaced, contacts cleaned or board replaced. If replacement is chosen, a new fob shell is supplied, programmed to your vehicle’s BCM on site and the blade cut to match.

6
Full Function Test

Range test at 10m and 20m. All button functions verified. Central locking confirmed working from the driver’s position. Aaron doesn’t leave until the fob works exactly as expected.

The Situation

A tradesman in Rotherham found his Ford Transit remote fob had stopped working completely. The van still started with the blade key, but central locking was non-functional — a problem when leaving a loaded van unattended.

What Aaron Did

Aaron inspected the fob on site and found a corroded circuit board from water ingress — likely from a wet pocket. Rather than programming a full replacement fob, Aaron replaced the circuit board and resealed the casing. The remote was tested at 20 metres. Full function restored in 20 minutes at less than half the cost of a replacement key.
