7 signs your car key battery is dying

How to tell your key fob battery needs replacing, 7 signs

Most batteries fade gradually rather than failing all at once. Catching the warning signs early means you avoid being locked out.

1

Reduced range

You used to unlock from the end of the driveway. Now you need to be at the car door. Reduced signal range is the first sign of a weakening battery.

2

Buttons need multiple presses

Pressing lock or unlock once no longer works reliably. You find yourself pressing two or three times. The battery cannot produce a strong enough signal consistently.

3

Dashboard warning light

Many modern cars, Ford, Vauxhall, BMW, Mercedes, display a key warning symbol or “key fob battery low” message on the instrument cluster.

4

Key not detected in push-start cars

If your car has a push-button start, a weak battery causes “key not detected” even when the fob is in your hand or pocket.

5

LED on fob is dim or absent

Press any button and watch the LED indicator light. A healthy battery produces a sharp flash. A dying battery gives a dim flicker or nothing at all.

6

Intermittent working

The fob works in the morning but not in the evening. Cold weather shortens the range of a weak battery further, intermittent faults that worsen in winter are a battery sign.

7

The car has not been used for weeks

Key fobs discharge slowly even when unused. A car left standing for more than three weeks may return with a flat fob battery.

Which battery does my car key need?

Car key fob battery type by make and model, UK reference table

The battery type is printed on the old cell, always match the number exactly. CR2032 and CR2025 share the same 20mm diameter but different thickness, a CR2025 will rattle in a CR2032 slot and lose contact. When in doubt, check inside the battery compartment door or the vehicle handbook under “remote control”.

How to open your key fob

How to change car key fob battery, by key type

Different key types open differently. Using a screwdriver on a card key will crack it. Here is how to open each type correctly.

Standard blade remote fob

Ford, Vauxhall, older BMW, Toyota

Locate the small slot or seam along the edge of the fob. Insert a flat coin (not a screwdriver, it marks the plastic). Twist gently to separate the two halves. The battery sits in a tray, note the polarity markings (+ face up in most) before removing. Lift with a fingernail, not a metal tool. Snap closed firmly after fitting.

Flip key (remote with folding blade)

Vauxhall Corsa D, BMW 3 Series, Renault, Peugeot

Fold the blade out first. The fob body will have a seam or a small slot near where the blade pivots. Use a coin in the slot to separate. Some flip keys have a small screw on the back, remove with a JIS or Phillips #0 screwdriver before prying. Battery usually sits under a plastic clip, press the clip aside with a fingernail.

Smart keyless entry card

Nissan Qashqai, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208

Card keys are the hardest to open without damage. There is a seam along one of the long edges. Insert a plastic guitar pick or a credit card into the seam and slide along to release the clips. Do not twist, the board inside is mounted close to the edge and will snap. Battery is usually a thin CR2025 or CR2016, slide out with a fingernail.

BMW Display Key / Audi Advanced Key

BMW G-series, Audi A6/Q7/Q8 (2016+)

These keys have a charging port or a battery compartment cover on the reverse. BMW Display Key, slide the panel off the back using the notch at the bottom. Battery is a standard CR2032 beneath a retaining clip. Audi Advanced Key, the battery door is on the back, use a coin to turn the locking slot, lift the door, swap the CR2450 cell.

Mercedes KEYLESS-GO proximity fob

Mercedes W205/W213/GLC/GLE (2014+)

Fold out the emergency blade first (press the release button on the fob body). This reveals a seam. Use a coin in the slot at the base. The two halves separate to reveal the battery tray. CR2032 sits face-up under a metal clip. Press the clip aside, slide the battery out toward you. Do not force, the NEC transponder chip is mounted close to the battery holder.

General rule: never use a metal screwdriver directly on the fob seam. It slips and marks the plastic. Use a coin, a plastic guitar pick, or a purpose-made fob opening tool. If the fob case shows cracks or the clips are broken, a battery will not fix it, the fob needs replacing.

Key still not working after battery change?

Car key battery changed but still not working, 7 causes and fixes

Most guides stop at fitting the battery. This section covers what happens when that does not work.

Battery fitted the wrong way round

The most common mistake. Every coin cell is marked “+” on the flat face. If the fob worked briefly and then died, or has never worked since the swap, open it and check polarity. The “+” face must match the “+” symbol in the battery compartment.

✓ You can fix this yourself

Battery making poor contact (wrong size fitted)

A CR2025 in a CR2032 slot will rattle and lose contact intermittently. A CR2032 in a CR2025 slot may not close. The fob must use the exact battery code shown inside the compartment, diameter and thickness must both match.

✓ You can fix this yourself

Fob needs resyncing to the car

After a flat battery, some key fobs lose their sync position with the car’s rolling code sequence. Fix, stand close to the car, press Lock and Unlock simultaneously for three seconds, or refer to the vehicle handbook for the resync procedure (varies by make). On older Vauxhalls and Fords, pressing the unlock button five times rapidly with the ignition on re-establishes the link.

✓ You can fix this yourself

Corrosion on battery contacts

If the old battery leaked (white or green residue visible), clean the contacts with a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol. Corrosion stops the new battery making a clean circuit even if it is the right type and correctly oriented.

✓ You can fix this yourself

The fob has water damage

Water ingress causes shorts on the circuit board. Signs, buttons work but nothing happens, or the car locks and unlocks on its own. A new battery will not fix water damage. The fob needs replacing.

→ Call Aaron, battery will not resolve this

Transponder chip fault (car starts but fob buttons do not work)

The remote and the transponder are separate systems in most keys. If the car starts fine but the remote locking does not work after a new battery, the fault is in the RF transmitter, not the transponder. Aaron diagnoses and programmes or replaces the fob.

→ Call Aaron, battery will not resolve this

Key not recognised at all (immobiliser warning light)

If the car shows an immobiliser light or “key not recognised” on the dashboard, the transponder chip has lost its link to the ECU. This is not a battery problem, it requires key reprogramming via the OBD port. Call Aaron.

→ Call Aaron, battery will not resolve this

Still not working after trying the above?

Call Aaron on 07513 664346. He will ask three questions and tell you whether it is a resync, a fob fault or a programming issue, and quote a firm price before travelling.

Very grateful for AH Autokeys work. He did a fantastic job for me. I locked my car and house keys in my car boot at gone 11pm at night when I was out alone, I had 6% phone battery, called the first person I found on Google, only to find out he wasn’t local. Despite this though, he still agreed to drive out 50mins to help. The car was unlocked door in no time but the boot wasn’t accessible from the inside and the car was too old to be opened electronically. He spent a long time trying to unlock the car boot. After a while, I was worried he might give up and say it can’t be done. He persevered though and finally managed to retrieve my keys. If I’d called somebody else, maybe they’d have given up on it so I’m really grateful that he stuck with it for me! I hope I never have to use the service again, but if I find myself in this boat in the future, this will be the first place I call. I can’t recommend enough. Thank you!

Frequently asked questions

Car key battery replacement, questions answered

A replacement cell costs £5 to £10 and takes two minutes to fit yourself. If the key still fails with a new battery, the fault is the key or its pairing, and Aaron programmes or replaces it from £100. No VAT. No call-out fee. Aaron comes to your vehicle.

The battery code is printed on the old cell and on the inside of the compartment door. Most modern UK cars use CR2032, CR2025 or CR2016. The exact type depends on the make, model and year, see the table above. Never substitute a similar-looking battery, CR2032 and CR2025 share the same diameter but a CR2025 will rattle in a CR2032 slot and lose contact.

The seven most common causes, wrong polarity (“+” face must match the marking), wrong battery size fitted, fob needs resyncing to the car (common after a flat battery), corrosion on contacts, water damage, RF transmitter fault, or transponder/immobiliser issue. See the full diagnostic guide above.

Resync procedure varies by make. Ford, turn ignition on, press Lock five times rapidly. Vauxhall, hold Lock and Unlock together for two seconds with the doors shut. BMW, press Unlock, hold for three seconds. If none of these work, Aaron carries OBD-based resync tools for all 34 makes.

Standard remote fob, three to five years. Smart/proximity key (KEYLESS-GO, passive entry), one to three years because the fob transmits continuously when near the car. Cold weather shortens battery life further. Replace at the first sign of reduced range rather than waiting for complete failure.

Yes for most standard remote fobs and flip keys, a coin, the correct battery and five minutes. Not recommended for BMW Display Keys, card-style remotes (Nissan, Renault) or any fob showing cracks or prior water exposure. If the new battery does not fix the problem, stop and call Aaron rather than buying multiple batteries.

No, the key’s programming is stored in non-volatile memory and survives a battery change. However, some fobs lose their rolling-code sync after being fully flat for an extended period. This is a resync, not a reprogram, Aaron can do it at your vehicle.

Yes, Aaron covers Barnsley, Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Wakefield and all of South Yorkshire. He brings the correct battery for your make and model before setting off. If the battery alone does not fix the problem, he diagnoses and resolves in the same visit.

Quick answers

Q

How much does car key battery replacement cost UK?

A

A new cell costs £5 to £10 and you can fit it in two minutes. If the key still fails, Aaron programmes it from £100. No VAT. No call-out fee. Aaron comes to you across South Yorkshire.

Q

What battery does a car key fob use?

A

Most UK car key fobs use a CR2032, CR2025 or CR2016 lithium coin cell. The exact type is printed on the old battery and on the inside of the battery compartment. Never substitute, CR2032 and CR2025 look identical but are different thicknesses.

Q

How do I know if my key fob battery is dead?

A

Seven signs, reduced range (have to stand closer), buttons need multiple presses, “key battery low” dashboard warning, “key not detected” in push-start cars, dim or absent LED on the fob, intermittent faults, or the car has sat unused for weeks.

Q

Can a dead key fob battery drain the car battery?

A

No. The key fob battery and the car battery are separate systems. A dead fob battery means the remote locking stops working, but the car’s main battery and ignition system are unaffected.
