How to Get a Spare Car Key in the UK
A spare car key comes from four routes, and only a mobile auto locksmith completes one in a single visit. A V5C in your name and photo identification are required before cutting begins.
Getting a spare car key, the short version
- ✓Four routes exist. A mobile locksmith is the only single-visit one
- ✓Bring a V5C in your name and photo identification
- ✓A spare cut now costs £60 to £300
- ✓The same vehicle after losing every key costs £150 to £650
- ✓Never store the spare in or on the vehicle
How do you get a spare car key?
A spare car key comes from a mobile auto locksmith, a main dealer, an online blank paired with local programming, or a high-street counter. Only the first produces a fully working key in a single visit.
The four routes differ on lead time, price and the risk of ending up with a key that does part of the job. The table below sets them against each other.
| Route | Lead time | Cost | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile auto locksmith | Same day, at the vehicle | £60 to £250 | None, key tested before the technician leaves |
| Main dealer | 3 to 14 days, vehicle at the workshop | £150 to £500 | Booking delay and VAT |
| Online blank plus local programming | 2 to 7 days, two appointments | £29 to £90 part, £60 to £120 labour | Wrong frequency or pre-locked chip |
| High-street key counter | Same day, blade only | £15 to £40 | No chip, the engine stays immobilised |
The high-street route causes the most disappointment. A counter cuts the blade accurately and carries no immobiliser equipment, so the key turns the barrel and the engine stays blocked on every vehicle built since 1998.
What does a spare car key require from you?
A spare car key requires a V5C logbook in your name, photo identification, the registration number and the VIN. An existing working key halves the programming time.
Five items complete the checklist. The table below explains why each one is asked for.
| Item | Why it is needed | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| V5C logbook in your name | Establishes the registered keeper | Paper document or DVLA record |
| Photo identification | Matches the name on the V5C to you | Passport or UK driving licence |
| Registration number | Resolves make, model, year and key system | Number plate or V5C |
| VIN | Returns the key code from manufacturer records | Windscreen base, door frame, V5C section 1 |
| Existing working key | Halves the programming time | In your hand |
Ownership verification protects the vehicle rather than the paperwork. Cutting a working key hands someone access, so the check is the single safeguard between legitimate work and vehicle theft.
If the V5C sits with DVLA
A recent private purchase leaves the V5C in transit for two to four weeks. A bill of sale plus photo identification covers the gap on most jobs, and confirming that by phone before booking avoids a wasted visit.
When is the right time to cut a spare?
The right time is while a working key still exists. A surviving key lets the immobiliser authorise a new chip over the OBD port, which avoids the security access procedure an all-keys-lost job requires.
The saving is measurable rather than theoretical. The table below compares the same vehicle in both states.
| Situation | Spare cut now | Same job after losing every key | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot | £60 to £120 | £150 to £300 | £90 to £180 |
| Volkswagen Group | £100 to £180 | £200 to £350 | £100 to £170 |
| BMW and Mercedes-Benz | £150 to £300 | £280 to £600 | £130 to £300 |
| Land Rover | £180 to £320 | £320 to £650 | £140 to £330 |
Premium makes carry the widest gap. A Land Rover spare cut today costs around half what the same vehicle costs once every key is gone.
What happens during a spare key appointment?
Five stages complete the work, typically within 20 to 45 minutes at the vehicle.
Confirm the vehicle from the registration by phone
The registration returns make, model, year, blade profile and transponder type. That produces a fixed price before anyone travels.
Present the V5C and photo identification
Ownership is verified before cutting begins. A technician who skips this check is operating outside accepted UK practice.
Blade cut to code rather than copied
A code-cut blade carries factory depths. A blade traced from a worn original inherits that wear and sticks in the lock sooner.
Transponder paired to the immobiliser
The existing key already sits in immobiliser memory, so the new chip registers over the OBD port in minutes.
Remote paired and the key tested in full
Lock, unlock, boot release and engine start are each confirmed before the technician leaves.
Stage 3 separates a spare from a copy. Code cutting reads the original specification rather than the current key, which is why a spare cut this way often operates the lock more smoothly than the key it joins.
Which costs apply, where does the key live, and what does it prevent?
Three questions close the job, what the cutting itself involves, where the finished key belongs, and what the whole exercise saves against the alternative.
What does car key cutting involve for a spare?
Car key cutting for a spare takes 3 to 5 minutes on a code-cutting machine. The blade mills from the key code held against the VIN rather than from a tracing of the existing key.
Two cutting methods exist. Code cutting reproduces the factory specification. Duplication traces the current blade and carries its wear forward, which shortens the life of both keys and the lock.
A spare cut to code also serves as the reference blade later. Where the original wears past tolerance, the spare still carries accurate depths.
How much does a spare save against lost car keys?
A spare saves £90 to £330 against the same vehicle with lost car keys and no survivor. The gap widens with immobiliser complexity rather than with vehicle value.
Time carries a second cost. A spare appointment runs 20 to 45 minutes at a moment you choose, while an all-keys-lost job runs 45 to 120 minutes at a moment chosen for you.
Where do spare car keys belong once cut?
Spare car keys belong with a person rather than with the vehicle. A partner, parent or housemate holding the spare resolves a lockout at no cost and at no security risk.
Six storage options cover normal practice. The table below rates each on security and on availability at the moment it is needed.
| Storage location | Security | Availability when needed |
|---|---|---|
| With a partner, parent or housemate | High | High, a phone call away |
| At home in a fixed place | High | Moderate, useless at the roadside |
| At a workplace locker or desk | Moderate | Moderate, office hours only |
| In a wallet or bag carried daily | Moderate | High, though it travels with the first key |
| Magnetic box under the wheel arch | Very low | High, and the first place a thief inspects |
| Inside the vehicle | None | None, it locks in with the original |
The magnetic box deserves its rating. Thieves check wheel arches, bumpers and tow points as a matter of routine, and a key found there hands over the vehicle rather than merely the doors.
Does a spare reduce the car key replacement cost later?
A spare reduces the future car key replacement cost by 60 to 120%. The immobiliser already trusts a key, so every later job runs over OBD rather than through module access.
Two keys also halve the cycle count on each. A lock cylinder rated for 150,000 cycles reaches that figure far later when two blades share the work, which delays the wear that causes sticking and snapping.

Very grateful for AH Autokeys work. He did a fantastic job for me. I locked my car and house keys in my car boot at gone 11pm at night when I was out alone, I had 6% phone battery, called the first person I found on Google, only to find out he wasn’t local. Despite this though, he still agreed to drive out 50mins to help. The car was unlocked door in no time but the boot wasn’t accessible from the inside and the car was too old to be opened electronically. He spent a long time trying to unlock the car boot. After a while, I was worried he might give up and say it can’t be done. He persevered though and finally managed to retrieve my keys. If I’d called somebody else, maybe they’d have given up on it so I’m really grateful that he stuck with it for me! I hope I never have to use the service again, but if I find myself in this boat in the future, this will be the first place I call. I can’t recommend enough. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()
