Key Fob Programming, A Guide for UK Drivers
Key fob programming writes a fob identity into the vehicle receiver memory. Most UK vehicles built 1998 to 2015 accept an onboard sequence. Everything after that needs a diagnostic tool.
Key fob programming, the short version
- ✓DIY works on most UK vehicles built 1998 to 2015
- ✓Ford, ignition OFF to RUN 8 times in 10 seconds
- ✓Every fob must be programmed in the same session or the others stop working
- ✓UK fobs run at 433 MHz. A 315 MHz import never pairs
- ✓Professional programming: £50 to £200 depending on the immobiliser
What is key fob programming?
Key fob programming writes a fob identity into the vehicle receiver memory. The receiver then accepts the rolling code that fob transmits on every button press and rejects every other code.
Two separate systems sit inside one key. The remote transmitter handles locking and boot release. The transponder handles engine start through the immobiliser. Each carries its own programming procedure.
A fob paired to the remote receiver locks and unlocks the doors. That same fob leaves the engine immobilised until the transponder is programmed separately through the OBD port.
Can you programme a key fob yourself?
A key fob programmes at home on most UK vehicles built between 1998 and 2015. Manufacturers removed onboard programming as rolling-code encryption replaced fixed codes from roughly 2015 onward.
Seven mainstream makes published onboard sequences during that period. The table below lists the sequence for each make and the signal the vehicle returns on success.
| Make | Years with DIY support | Sequence | Confirmation signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford | 1998 to 2016 | Ignition OFF to RUN 8 times in 10 seconds, end on RUN | Door locks cycle once |
| Vauxhall | 1998 to 2015 | Ignition to position 2, hold Lock and Unlock together 2 seconds | Indicators flash twice |
| Nissan | 2002 to 2007 | Doors locked from inside, ignition OFF to ON 6 times in 10 seconds | Hazard lights flash twice |
| Peugeot / Citroen | 1998 to 2012 | Ignition ON, hold Unlock 5 seconds while turning ignition OFF | Indicators flash once |
| Renault | 1998 to 2010 | Card or fob held to reader, ignition cycled twice | Dash chime |
| Toyota | 1998 to 2010 | Driver door open, key inserted and removed twice, Lock plus Unlock held | Locks cycle |
| Honda | 1998 to 2012 | Ignition ON and OFF 3 times ending ON, press any fob button | Locks cycle |
Model year matters more than make. A 2014 Ford Focus accepts the 8-cycle sequence. A 2018 Ford Focus running PATS Gen 4 rejects it because the HiTag Pro chip uses 128-bit encryption.
How do you programme a key fob step by step?
To programme a key fob at home, work through 6 stages in sequence. The whole procedure takes under 10 minutes.
Confirm the vehicle supports onboard programming
Check the model year against the DIY table above. Vehicles built after 2015 rarely accept onboard sequences because rolling-code encryption blocks the receiver from entering learn mode.
Gather every fob for the vehicle
Onboard programming overwrites the receiver memory. A fob left out of the session stops working permanently. Hold the new fob and every existing fob before starting.
Close all doors and sit in the driver seat
An open door interrupts the body control module watchdog on Ford, Vauxhall and Nissan systems. The sequence fails silently with a door ajar.
Run the ignition sequence for the make
Follow the exact cycle count and time window from the table. Ford requires 8 cycles in 10 seconds. Nissan requires 6. A cycle outside the window resets the counter to zero.
Press a button on each fob in turn
The receiver holds learn mode for 10 to 30 seconds. Press Lock on the new fob first, then each existing fob, within that window.
Exit and test from outside the vehicle
Turn the ignition OFF to close the session. Test lock, unlock, boot release and panic from 5 metres and from 15 metres.
Stage 2 causes the most permanent damage. An owner who programmes one new fob without the existing pair finds both original fobs dead afterwards, which converts a free job into a paid one.
Frequency check before buying
UK vehicles transmit at 433 MHz. North American models use 315 MHz. A 315 MHz fob bought cheaply online enters programming mode and pairs to the transponder, yet the remote buttons never operate the locks. The frequency prints on the FCC label inside the fob casing.
Which vehicles block DIY key fob programming?
Six manufacturers block onboard key fob programming: BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Land Rover and post-2017 Ford. Each routes key learning through an encrypted module that needs a diagnostic tool.
The table below lists each make against the year onboard programming stopped, the security architecture responsible, and the tool a locksmith uses instead.
| Make | Blocked from | Reason | Tool required |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW | 2004 onward | CAS and FEM modules use encrypted key slots | ISTA or Xhorse Key Tool Plus |
| Mercedes-Benz | 2003 onward | FBS3 and FBS4 encryption with EIS pairing | Xentry or Smart Pro |
| Audi / VW | 2010 onward | MQB platform uses a component protection PIN | VVDI2 or ODIS |
| Land Rover | 2011 onward | KVM module holds the key database | JLR Pathfinder or HW04 |
| Ford | 2017 onward | PATS Gen 4 HiTag Pro 128-bit encryption | Autel IM508 over OBD |
| Toyota | 2011 onward | Smart Key system with G-chip rolling code | Techstream or Autel |
Component protection on the Volkswagen MQB platform illustrates the barrier. The module refuses any key write until the tool supplies a 7-digit PIN read from the immobiliser data, which no onboard sequence can deliver.
Why did key fob programming fail?
Key fob programming fails most often from ignition cycles run too slowly. Ford allows 10 seconds for 8 cycles. A sequence at 11 seconds resets the counter and returns no error message.
Five symptoms cover the majority of failed attempts. The table below matches each symptom to its cause and the corrective action.
| Symptom during programming | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Locks never cycle at the sequence end | Ignition cycles too slow or a door left open | Repeat faster with all doors shut |
| Programming mode entered, fob rejected | Fob frequency wrong for the region | Confirm 433 MHz on the FCC label, not 315 MHz |
| New fob works, original stops working | Session overwrote the memory slots | Programme every fob in the same session |
| Buttons work, engine refuses to start | Remote paired but transponder unprogrammed | Transponder needs an OBD session |
| Nothing responds at any stage | Fob battery flat or board damaged | Fit a fresh CR2032 and retest |
The silent failure mode causes the most confusion. Onboard programming returns no error code, so a driver repeats a sequence that never entered learn mode at all.
From the workshop
A fob that locks and unlocks but leaves the engine dead is the most common call after a DIY attempt. The remote paired correctly; the transponder never did. The two systems programme independently, and the transponder half needs an OBD session on every vehicle built after 1998.
How much does professional key fob programming cost?
Professional key fob programming costs £50 to £200 in the UK. Remote-only pairing costs £50 to £90. Remote plus transponder on an encrypted immobiliser costs £120 to £200.
Main dealers charge 40 to 100% above that band for the same operation.
| Job | Locksmith price | Dealer price | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote pairing only, existing key present | £50 to £90 | £90 to £180 | 15 to 30 min |
| Remote plus transponder, OBD accessible | £80 to £140 | £150 to £300 | 25 to 45 min |
| Encrypted immobiliser, bench access | £120 to £200 | £250 to £500 | 45 to 90 min |
| Smart proximity key pairing | £140 to £220 | £300 to £600 | 45 to 90 min |
Dealer pricing assumes the vehicle reaches the workshop. A vehicle immobilised with no working key adds £100 to £300 recovery to the dealer figure.
Does a new key fob need a new battery?
A replacement key fob ships with a battery already fitted in most cases, though stock held over 12 months arrives below working voltage. A CR2032 below 2.8 volts fails mid-sequence and produces a false programming failure.
Fitting a fresh cell before the attempt removes one variable. Battery chemistry costs under £2 against a wasted programming session.
Where an existing fob stopped working rather than a new one being added, a flat cell explains the fault more often than a lost pairing. That scenario is covered in Car Key Battery Guide rather than here.
Key fob programming across South Yorkshire
Aaron Hoburn programmes remotes, transponders and proximity keys across Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Wakefield. Autel IM508 covers OBD-accessible makes, Smart Pro handles Mercedes EIS and BMW CAS, and VVDI2 reads the component protection PIN on Volkswagen Group vehicles.
Where a fob needs pairing rather than cutting, car key programming runs from £100. Where the fob casing split or the board failed, key fob replacement transfers the working electronics into a new shell. Ford owners find the PATS generations and chip types listed in Ford key replacement, and contact details sit on contact us.

Very grateful for AH Autokeys work. He did a fantastic job for me. I locked my car and house keys in my car boot at gone 11pm at night when I was out alone, I had 6% phone battery, called the first person I found on Google, only to find out he wasn’t local. Despite this though, he still agreed to drive out 50mins to help. The car was unlocked door in no time but the boot wasn’t accessible from the inside and the car was too old to be opened electronically. He spent a long time trying to unlock the car boot. After a while, I was worried he might give up and say it can’t be done. He persevered though and finally managed to retrieve my keys. If I’d called somebody else, maybe they’d have given up on it so I’m really grateful that he stuck with it for me! I hope I never have to use the service again, but if I find myself in this boat in the future, this will be the first place I call. I can’t recommend enough. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()
