The Broken Key Situation

Why You Must Not Attempt DIY Extraction

A broken key blade inside a lock barrel feels like it should be straightforward to extract. It isn’t. The internal mechanism of a lock barrel is designed to grip the blade at multiple points as it rotates — the same mechanism that holds the key in place while driving also holds the broken section firmly once the blade has snapped.

Attempting to remove a broken key blade with pliers, tweezers, paperclips, superglue or any improvised tool causes one or more of the following: pushes the broken section deeper into the barrel — sometimes past the point where extraction is possible; damages the internal wafer or tumbler stack; scratches or distorts the barrel entry, compromising the lock; and in the worst cases, breaks a second object inside the barrel, requiring complete lock replacement.

Professional extraction uses dedicated broken key extraction picks and hook tools that navigate the barrel’s internal channels without disturbing the wafer stack. The broken section is carefully manoeuvred to the entry point and removed cleanly. The barrel remains fully functional.

If the key has broken in the ignition barrel — do not attempt to start the vehicle. Attempting to turn the ignition with a broken key fragment causes the fragment to rotate with the barrel, jamming it in a position where extraction becomes significantly more difficult or impossible. Call Aaron immediately.

If the key has broken in the door lock — do not use the other side of the vehicle’s key. If both door locks share the same key profile, using the blade in the other lock further confirms the blade is stuck and the lock is under tension.

Common broken key scenarios
Worn blade snaps in ignition

Thin metal fatigues over years of use. Most common on keys over 5 years old. Often snaps at the shoulder — the narrowest point near the bow.

Cold weather fracture in door lock

Cold metal contracts and becomes more brittle. Worn blades snap more easily in winter, particularly in frozen door locks.

Copied key is thinner than original

Aftermarket key blanks are sometimes slightly thinner than OEM blanks. Under torque in a stiff ignition, they snap earlier than the original would.

Key turns beyond normal range

Forcing a key that feels resistant rather than turning smoothly. Often caused by a worn barrel — the key catches on a wafer and the force breaks the blade.

After extraction, Aaron can cut and programme a replacement key at the same visit — so you leave with a fully working key, not just an empty lock. Ask for a combined price when you call. See the car key replacement page for details.

Extraction Process

How Aaron Extracts a Broken Key Safely

The extraction process varies depending on how deep the fragment is, which lock it’s in, and whether the barrel is under rotational tension. Aaron assesses before extracting.

1
Call Immediately — Don’t Try Anything First

The moment a key snaps, call Aaron. Do not attempt to start the car, use the other door lock or insert anything into the barrel. Every attempt at DIY extraction increases the difficulty of professional extraction.

2
Aaron Arrives at Your Location

30–45 minutes with a full set of broken key extraction picks, hook tools, lubricants and key cutting equipment. Aaron comes to wherever the vehicle is parked.

3
Barrel Assessment

Aaron examines the lock barrel to determine the fragment position, how far it’s recessed and whether the barrel is under tension. For ignition extractions, the gear selector position and steering lock status are also checked.

4
Tension Released (if applicable)

If the barrel is under rotational tension from a partial turn, Aaron releases the tension before attempting extraction. Attempting to remove a fragment under tension is the most common cause of DIY extraction failure.

5
Fragment Extracted Using Specialist Tools

Broken key extraction picks navigate the barrel’s wafer channels alongside the fragment. Hook tools engage the broken end and guide it back to the barrel entry. For deeply recessed fragments, a combination of pick positions is used.

6
Barrel Function Verified

Once the fragment is removed, Aaron tests the bare barrel with a test key to confirm no internal wafers are damaged and the barrel rotates freely at all positions.

7
Replacement Key Cut and Programmed (if required)

Aaron cuts a new blade to the barrel’s key code and programmes the transponder chip to the vehicle’s ECU. One visit — extraction and new key, both complete.

Do’s and Don’ts while waiting for Aaron
Stay with the vehicle if possible
Call Aaron immediately and follow his phone advice
Note which lock the key broke in (door / ignition)
Have your V5C or proof of ownership ready
Do not try to start the engine
Do not insert anything into the barrel
Do not try to pull the fragment with pliers or tweezers
Do not use superglue — this bonds the fragment permanently
When extraction isn’t possible

In rare cases — usually where a DIY attempt has pushed the fragment past a wafer set — extraction may not be viable. Aaron will always advise honestly. If the door lock barrel needs replacement, Aaron can source and fit a new barrel coded to your key at a separate visit. If the ignition barrel is damaged, Aaron will advise on the options including coding a new barrel to existing keys.

The Auto Locksmith Association advises against all DIY broken key extraction attempts and recommends calling a professional immediately to preserve the lock barrel. Aaron carries the same extraction tools used by dealer-approved locksmiths.

Broken key extraction from a door lock starts from £80, from the ignition from £100. A replacement key cut and programmed at the same visit is additional — ask Aaron for a combined price. No VAT. No call-out fee. Price confirmed before Aaron sets off.
This is the most important thing to tell Aaron when you call. If a DIY attempt has been made, the fragment may have moved deeper or the barrel may have debris from improvised tools. Aaron will still attempt extraction but will need to assess the new position. Success rate is lower after failed DIY attempts.
Yes — this is the most common outcome. Aaron extracts the broken fragment, verifies the barrel, then cuts and programmes a replacement key at the same visit using the vehicle’s key code. One callout, fully sorted.
If wafer damage is detected after extraction, Aaron advises on barrel replacement options. A replacement barrel can be sourced and coded to your existing keys. Aaron will be honest about the extent of any damage found during the extraction process.
