and Why It’s Not Simple
A replacement car key is not just a piece of cut metal. Since the mid-1990s, virtually every car sold in the UK has included an electronic transponder chip inside the key head. This chip communicates with the vehicle’s immobiliser ECU at start-up. If the chip isn’t recognised — or isn’t present — the engine will not start, even if the blade profile is a perfect match.
This is why cutting a key at a hardware store or supermarket kiosk only works for older, non-transponder vehicles. For any car made after approximately 1995, the replacement key must be both mechanically cut to the correct blade profile and electronically programmed to the vehicle’s immobiliser system — a process known as key coding or transponder programming.
Modern keys add another layer of complexity. Remote fob keys include a radio frequency transmitter that controls central locking. Smart keys and proximity keys allow keyless entry and push-button starting, communicating with the vehicle via rolling-code encryption. Flip keys combine a folding blade with a built-in remote. Each type requires different programming procedures and specialist equipment.
This is why car key replacement is a specialist service — and why Aaron invests in the professional programming equipment required to do it properly on site, rather than sending the vehicle to a workshop.
Do you still have a working key? If so, Aaron can programme a duplicate or spare while he’s with you — often at a lower cost than a full replacement. See the spare car keys page for details. If all keys are gone, see the lost car keys page instead.
How Aaron Replaces Your Car Key On Site
From your call to a working key in your hand — here’s exactly what happens when Aaron comes to replace your car key. Most jobs are complete within 45–90 minutes of Aaron arriving.
Tell Aaron your vehicle make, model, year and what key type you need. He confirms the price over the phone before setting off — no obligation, no surprises.
30–45 minute average response across the coverage area. Aaron travels to your home, workplace or wherever the vehicle is located. You don’t need to go anywhere.
Aaron reads your vehicle’s key data via the OBD port using specialist diagnostic equipment. This confirms the exact transponder type, blade profile and immobiliser configuration required.
Using a professional key cutting machine, Aaron cuts the replacement blade to the exact specification of your vehicle. Laser-cut and HU66 high-security profiles are also cut on site.
The key’s transponder chip is programmed directly to your vehicle’s immobiliser ECU using the Autel IM508, Smart Pro, Xhorse VVDI2 or ACDP. The chip is recognised by the car as authorised.
If your key includes a remote central locking function, Aaron syncs the radio frequency transmitter to your vehicle. Proximity and smart key functions are also configured where required.
Aaron tests the complete key — blade in ignition, engine start, central locking, alarm, all functions. He doesn’t leave until the replacement key works exactly as the original.
If Aaron is already programming a replacement key, adding a spare key at the same visit costs significantly less than a separate callout. Always worth asking.
A Real Car Key Replacement:
BMW 3 Series, Sheffield
This is a representative example of a car key replacement job Aaron completes regularly across Sheffield and South Yorkshire. The details reflect the real process, equipment and outcome for this type of vehicle and key.
2021 BMW 3 Series — Smart Key Replacement
The customer had one damaged BMW smart key — still working, but the casing was cracked and the blade mechanism unreliable. Rather than wait days for a dealer appointment and pay BMW dealer rates plus VAT, they called Aaron. Using the Smart Pro, Aaron programmed a new smart key to the BMW’s CAS module on the customer’s driveway in Sheffield. The HU92 laser-cut blade was cut on site. Both keys were tested before Aaron left.

Over a Main Dealer?
Most drivers assume they have to go to the main dealer for a replacement car key. In reality, a qualified mobile auto locksmith using the same equipment as a dealer technician can cut and programme the key at your location — faster, cheaper and without leaving your driveway.
Independent mobile auto locksmiths use the same OEM-equivalent programming software as dealer technicians. The Auto Locksmith Association (ALA) sets standards for training and equipment across the trade. Which? consumer guides consistently recommend getting quotes from approved independents before going to a main dealer for key replacement.
Which Type of Car Key Do You Need?
Car key technology has evolved significantly over the past 30 years. Understanding which type of key your vehicle uses helps Aaron prepare the right equipment and gives you an accurate price guide before he arrives.
A conventional blade key with a small transponder chip embedded in the plastic head. When inserted in the ignition, the immobiliser reads the chip via a coil antenna. If the chip isn’t recognised, the engine won’t start even if the blade turns. These are the most straightforward to replace.
A transponder key with an integrated radio frequency remote for central locking and sometimes alarm arming. The remote transmitter is programmed separately to the vehicle’s BCM (Body Control Module). Replacing one requires both blade cutting, transponder coding and remote synchronisation.
The key remains in your pocket or bag. The vehicle detects it via ultra-wideband or LF radio signals and allows entry and engine start without inserting a key. These use rolling-code encryption updated every use, making them the most technically complex to replace. Require specific programming modules.
A key with a folding blade that retracts into the fob body when not in use. The key head contains the remote transmitter and sometimes a proximity sensor. Popular on European makes from the 2000s onwards. Blade cutting requires the same precision as any HU blade profile.
Instead of a conventional edge-cut blade, these keys use a milled channel cut into the flat of the blade. The pattern is significantly harder to duplicate without specialist equipment. Common on BMW and VW group vehicles. Aaron’s key cutting machine handles all HU profiles.
A flat card-format key used primarily by Renault (Megane, Laguna, Espace). No mechanical blade — the card communicates electronically. Entry requires pressing a button on the card. Replacement requires specific Renault card programming via the UCH module.
